It's amazing to think about, but alllllll the way from GEO, the antenna pattern "footprints" on the ground can be pretty intricate. These patterns are optimized for a satellites market. For example let's say a Japanese satellite doesn't want to spill any of it's signal over on to Korea. The antennas are optimized to do just that sort of thing.
