Claire -
the most usual cause of NICD battery failure is overcharging. NIMH is much more forgiving. CPQ shifted to mostly NIMH with the 7000 line of laptops but some (presario in particular) still use NICD. The best way to maintain long life on NICD batteries is to run them down completely before recharging. The CPQ owners manual suggests that you do this at least every 60 days to maintain battery life. Do you have a NICD battery? Did you fully discharge it at least every 60 days?

An 8 month old CPQ laptop would be in warranty for materials failure. As others have suggested, no manufacturer (Dell included) covers user-caused damage in their warranty. What model was this machine?
