Thread,
Totally from the FWIW department, below is a recent quote from a coaxial cable vendor CEO. After reviewing what appears to be little to no results OR pretty poor results concerning xDSL technologies, still seems like to HFC makes more sense. I know very little about VDSL (fiber to the curb technology?) but from seeing how terrible all the flavors of xDSL technology has gone, I'm wondering if VDSL is worth investing the time to figure out if it's viable? Afterall the telcos xDSL technologies have put out about 6 years of press releases, exciting their customers, but producing no results that I'm aware of?

If Sprint(or any other "teleco") quits complaining to the FCC (about getting local access through CLECs infrastructure) and buys a cable company, then I'll know HFC is for real.

''We also see compelling industry dynamics. We believe that the proposed AT&T Corp. and Telecommunications, Inc. merger confirms that coaxial cable and the Hybrid-Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) architecture provide the most cost-effective bandwidth into customers homes. We have strategically invested more than $90 million over the past 3 years to ensure that CommScope would be ready to serve the telecommunications industry as video, voice and data markets converge. Further, the vast majority of countries building new video networks have adopted HFC network architectures. Although we expect international sales to be down about 30 percent for the full year, we believe that the long-term opportunities are significant.''
