David,

Sorry - didn't mean to be vague (was just trying not to be too wordy).

One of the problems TP Monitor companies have always had in selling their product is that these products add an additional development effort (you must first write code from the client to the TPM, then from the TPM to the DB). On the back end - most TPM's offer developer's the choice of using C or Cobol (until most recently when they began to offer some support for C++ and JAVA) - this is straight code in a text editor. The only other option is to purchase a three-tier development tool which can use the middleware - these tools are most often extremely expensive and add a new learning curve effort to the equation.

The new "Object Monitors" offered from TPM vendors (like IBM, Hitachi and BEA) are no different - straight code in a text editor. Not the prettiest or easiest thing to work with.

MTS on the other hand, while not functionally equivalent as the ones mentioned previously, is extremely easy to develop with - they make use of VisualBasic. This makes MTS an attractive choice because they can use a development tool that presumably the company is already familiar with.

As we have learned through focus groups, most CIO and IS Managers prefer to use products that have a large base of talent they can choose from. If InPrise is able to offer this ease of development, and keep loyal developers, they have a good story and a compelling offering.

Of course the point was brought up earlier that the Borland developers feel abandoned - this is something which could greatly hurt their chances and must be remedied.

Hope that was a little clearer.

- Karen
