'WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Road and passenger rail
movements could be severely disrupted by the Year 2000
computer problem unless state and local authorities move
swiftly to address the problem, a federal official warned
Monday.

''The delays and risks to safety are potentially enormous,''
Deputy Transportation Secretary Mortimer Downey told a
gathering of transit and traffic experts.

''Imagine the disruption if one million traffic signals were to
fail, if buses or trains couldn't run because transit
management systems failed,'' Downey said.
