The news didn't look 'that bad' to me either. note:
biz.yahoo.com

So about 25% of VLSI's biz is to ericy.., this is bad.
the remark: '..but the Asian crisis is increasingly noticeable.'
right at the top is also bad...

..But as you read the rest of the release there's a lot of other
explanations that indicate things aren't too bad, or at least close
to a turnaround. And the comments on handset sales could
be interpreted as good for vlsi:

'Mobile Phones & Terminals showed an increase of 19 percent in
sales and a strong operating income. Ericsson has very well defended
its share of the market for mobile phones during the period. Ericsson is
particularly strong in the digital mobile phone segment. '

I agree this would be an excellent starting point. Personally, I've
doubled up and am averaged at 17. I'm less optimistic about the
downside than Dan, but I'll keep buying on the way down anyway.

Asia's the wildcard IMO. Gawd knows what'll happen, and then after
'it' happens, who knows what the market response will be. But VLSI's
in the right places, and I fully expect some stock moving product
announcements in the coming months.

It's way too hot in Seattle.., gotta find some water to get into
cheers,
-Kevin

PS. My guess is that Japan is not going to do much in the way of
reform, but that they'll make some token gesture to placate
the markets.
