ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 27, 1998--
Smart Network Solution to Provide Computer Connectivity for Student Dormitories
Cabletron Systems CS today announced that Butler University has chosen the award-winning SmartSwitch Router to provide student dormitories with high-speed connections to the University's 1000 mega bits per second (Mbps), computer communications infrastructure.
Butler is starting an ambitious project to provide switched Ethernet (10 Mbps) computer connections to 750 dorm rooms. The students will access the network to submit homework assignments in an "electronic drop box," as well as Internet access, electronic mail and on-line research.
The SmartSwitch Router will augment Butler's current Cabletron installation of SmartSwitch 9000 and SmartSwitch 6000 connectivity devices, which also support bandwidth-intensive file transfers at speeds of 10, 100 and 1000 Mbps -- up to 100 times faster than traditional Ethernet networks. Analyzing the robust network, Cabletron's SPECTRUM Enterprise Management solution was also selected for traffic analysis and proactive network management.
"Cabletron has provided the best solution for our technical needs," said Ken Sorenson, director of networks and systems. "We wanted a solution to meet today's needs and provide a platform to future technologies without any wholesale upgrades."
Butler represents a growing number of colleges and universities that have embraced Cabletron's networking solutions. Educational institutions such as Duke University and the Universities of Southern California, North Carolina, Arkansas and Morehead State have all chosen Smart Networks to facilitate their multimedia campus communications.
"Universities require high-performance solutions to meet their ever-increasing networking needs," said Stanley Stevens, Cabletron's director of government and education marketing. "Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router offers the industry's best value, enabling secure, manageable communications for network administrators while assuring ample bandwidth for distance learning and interactive, Web-base classes."
