PM Group Life Confirms Coverage Of Pfizer's Viagra Drug>PFE
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. (Dow Jones)--PM Group Life Insurance Co. confirmed coverage of Pfizer Inc.'s (PFE) Viagra drug.
The insurance company cited its policy of covering physician-prescribed, Food and Drug Administration-approved medications for the treatment of illness.
In a press release Monday, the company said with no prior authorization required, it covers six Viagra pills a month.
"Our contracts pay for treatment of illness according to professionally recognized standards of medical practice," the company said. "Viagra is used to treat an illness, erectile dysfunction."
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by spinal-cord injuries, diabetes, vascular problems and prostate cancer, among other conditions, PM Group Life said.
During the first three months of Viagra's availability, the company said more than 14,000 prescriptions for erectile dysfunction were covered by the company, with 98% for Viagra.
