Oracle Unveils Repository Roadmap to Help Corporations Better ManageEnterprise Information

Oracle(R) Repository 7 Offers Enterprise Meta Data Management,

Supports Open Standards for Java, UML and XML

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Oracle today unveiled a number of development initiatives that will dramatically increase the functionality and applicability of the industry-leading Oracle(r) Repository across both Oracle and partner solutions.

By storing all meta-data, including descriptive information about applications, development environments, business intelligence and data warehouse systems, the Oracle Repository addresses the needs of organizations that are increasingly struggling with the vast amounts of meta data they own. The Oracle Repository, already representing an essential part of corporate IT infrastructure, will be upgraded to version 7 scheduled to ship in a beta release later this year.

"The meta-data stored in our Oracle Repository, today, is the most important data set we own," said Andrew Marsh, data administrator, WestCoast Energy. "This is the data that our business is built on; the scalability, security and reliability of the Oracle Repository are key to the success of our business."

The Oracle Repository 7 will further enhance development and end-user productivity through component reuse, open tool integration and allowing developers to work as teams. Software professionals managing packaged applications can benefit from the lower cost of application customization and faster implementation.

According to Carl Olofson, analyst, IDC, "The Oracle Repository should address the pain of organizations trying to manage complex software systems as they grow, and to convert disparate data from those systems into useful information. The need for such functionality is becoming urgent as the Web creates intense pressure to deliver much more business information to internal and external users than ever before. There is a vision here for enterprise information management that makes sense for large corporations."

The Oracle Repository is currently packaged with Oracle Designer 2.1, Oracle's flagship modeling and generation tool, already providing much of the functionality required for enterprise meta-data management. It is built using the facilities of the Oracle8(TM) database, providing the extensive security, reliability, portability and scalability features needed in today's corporations. The repository includes a comprehensive meta-model which is extensible and has full multi-user support.

"Over the last decade corporations have built meta-data islands. IT departments need common infrastructure to consolidate these islands and make their systems more manageable and IT staff more productive," said Jeremy Burton, vice president of Tools Marketing at Oracle. "Oracle is the undisputed leader in data management, and the Oracle Repository will do for meta-data management what the Oracle database did for data management."

In order to meet the requirements of Oracle products and partners, Oracle is focusing on several key areas to extend the functionality and scope of the Oracle Repository. The Oracle Repository 7 will include:

* Open Java/CORBA API

* OMG XML-based Repository Interchange

* Meta-models for UML, Java and Data Warehousing

* Repository Held Files

* Configuration Management

* Visual Meta-Model Extensibility
