WaveTop Feedback
Raging Bull:
"I am a WaveTop user and saw that you are conducting a survey....
I am also a stockholder, having bought the stock about a year ago based on the reputation of founder David Deeds (of Conseco fame), and the company's dominant technological position in point-to-multi-point data broadcasting (which you explained very well in your article). While the stock is highly speculative, with WAVO's affiliations with Microsoft, Intel and PBS, it is really the ONLY company presently in position to create and dominate this evolving technology. The company's other divisions, NewsCast and Networks, and their relationship with Skycache (internet caching technology) combine to put them in the forefront of companies that can be called truly "information age" portfolio candidates.
I initially had difficulty installing TV tuners in my older proprietary-systems Compaq computer. When I got my new (non-proprietary) computer, I accomplished the installation of a STB PCI-TV tuner by myself in about ten minutes. Windows recognized it, asked for my CD with drivers -- and the tuner works beautifully.
I now look at my cached WaveTop content every morning, using it to shorten dramatically the time I usually spend cruising the Web for stock, sport, weather and other miscellaneous information. It has become a habit. The content has improved over the time I've used the software. (Incidentally, some of the sexiest stuff on WaveTop are the "streaming audio/video" ads.) I have experienced some glitches in running the program, but following the company's advice to re-boot my computer every couple of days has alleviated an occasional "lock-up" problem. I understand the upcoming revision to the software addresses this shortcoming.
Both as a stockholder and WaveTop user, I am very excited about the potential of this technology. I can see it playing a definite role in e-commerce, perhaps broadcast newspaper/magazine "subscriptions," and perhaps in the future one day, pre-paid downloads of videos, music, etc. I understand that WavePhore has patents on much faster transmission technology that will become relevant when we are in the digital TV era.
I also know that presently they are talking actively with the makers of set-top boxes. These can easily be enabled for WaveTop since they already contain a processor, a hard drive, and of course the TV tuner. For those people who still don't like to leave their computer towers on all day, a set-top box may be the answer....
Thanks for your interest in WaveTop and your coverage of the stock. I will look forward to the results of your survey of users. "
