"Supposedly the evil empire itself is considering coming out with a "portal" web site sometime. All I have heard about this is vague rumors but if msft really does develop a search engine site then I think yahoo would go down for a sizable hit, kind of like what is happening with real networks right now."

The first rumors of Microsoft's search engine appeared in the fall of 1997. Then they became specific, including the name of Microsoft's partner, how the search engine would integrate into MSN, and an unveiling date of January. Then Microsoft's Justice Department problems arose about crushing the competition. Not surprisingly there have been no further rumors or announcements about the search engine.
