UAW hopeful of GM settlement Tuesday --'''':>

Tuesday July 28, 10:49 am Eastern Time

FLINT, Mich., July 28 (Reuters) - Hopes that a settlement could
come some time today in the General Motors Corp.'s strikes
intensified Tuesday morning when United Auto Workers
representatives set up a large meeting room for reporters.

''We're all hoping it's going to happen today,'' said Reg McGhee,
a spokesman for the UAW.

The longest of two parts plant strikes here reached its 54th day
on Tuesday. The walkouts by 9,200 UAW members have cost GM more
than $2 billion in profits.

Talks have been going nearly non-stop since Saturday on various
levels as both sides tried to hammer out a deal involving the two
Flint parts plants and other parts operations where GM and the
UAW have disputes over productivity and health and safety issues.

GM has said it wants a settlement to the Flint strikes to also
address disputes at its two Dayton, Ohio, brake plants and a
stamping facility in Indianapolis, Ind. The UAW has threatened
strikes at both of those plants.

The walkouts have forced the company to shut down 25 of its 29
North American assembly operations. On Monday, GM restarted
production at its Bowling Green, Ky., Corvette plant and a full
size sport utility plant in Silao, Mexico, with parts from
outside suppliers.
