Market Slide

Hugh,

I think you are largely correct, in that the slide is in great part based on the additional uncertainty about the chief executive slot of the US in the short-term future. The market is always worried: for almost the past year we have had Asia and high equity valuations to worry about. Add to that the uncertainty of what will happen in the courtroom and the repercussions thereof.

The market is scared: it sees a high probability that the US economy, which has provided an anchor of stability throughout the Asian economic crisis, will soon be leaderless and adrift. Either the President will be spending all his time in court instead of supervising the daily workings of state, or we may be in a transition period while a new President gets settled in.

Whatever else you may say or think about President Clinton, for 6 years he has provided us a platform of unparalleled economic growth and stability--either by conscious direction, or by placing the right people in the appropriate functions and letting them do their job. The market does not like the possibility of change: economically, it is highly unlikely to be for the better. -JMHO, FWIW

regards, 3.
