Nan Ya keeps building fabs, despite slowdown
By Sandy Chen
TAOYUAN, Taiwan -- Despite the downturn in the memory market and sizable financial losses, DRAM maker Nan Ya Technology Corp. here has just broken ground on its second 8-in. wafer fab.
Nan Ya's new plant, dubbed Fab II, is located in the Hwa Ya Science Industrial Park, near Taipei. The park was build by Taipei-based Formosa Plastics, Taiwan's largest private enterprise and the parent company of Nan Ya.
Nan Ya, which announced plans to build Fab II last year, said the full capacity of the new, 0.13- to 0.12-micron plant will be around 30,000 wafers per month. Production will start in the first half of 2000, according to Charles Kau, vice president of Nan Ya.
"To survive in the DRAM market, you have to keep building new fabs to remain competitive," said Kau. "We also have to reach a certain economic scale to remain competitive.''
Nan Ya's current fab, called Fab I, is currently producing 16-megabit SDRAMs with 0.28-micron feature sizes. However, due to the oversupply of DRAMs in the market, the fab's total production is 25,000 wafers per month--about 10,000 less than originally forecasted by the Taiwanese company.
Still, Fab I will produce 64-Mbit SDRAMs at 0.22-micron by year's end. About 10% of this fab's total capacity will be dedicated to the foundry business, but the plant will be converted to a pure foundry in the future, Kau said. |
