I'll never forget that day. I was a young smarty pants lawyer in Chicago and I had a Monday morning meeting across the street from LaSalle Nat'l. Bank. They had a sign on the corner that tracked the market and we came out at noon and the sign said the market was -56 or so. I told my colleague that that wasn't too bad, considering what had happened the Friday before. Someone overheard me and said actually it's down 256; the bank's sign only went out two digits.

We rushed back to our office and spent the rest of the day watching a quotron that one of the partners had. The volume spun like a slot machine. Someone I knew got 3 margin calls that day. The number of BMWs on the Edens Expressway declined appreciably in the days that followed!
