Just got off the GI conf call...
The new GI settop box includes a cable modem and a platform that can include essentially a network computer and an operating system (OS). Furthermore, (I got a chance to ask questions during the call - last caller), the CEO spoke very favorably about their relationship with Oracle - is a GI netComputer settop box in the works? IMO yes.
The market as he noted would be split between TV/interactive and Cable/PC/interactive. But with a network PC in a settop, you get robust internet service, pus interactive TV, plus a PC modem for your PC. Sounds like a winning solution, but one SRCM will not be involved in.
Who will win? No one knows, he mentioned much of the market will be driven by the cable MSO's choosing a service. IMO SRCM is not even in the running. Oracle and Worldgate are the current leaders, Worldgate is in 7 markets with their interactive TV product, while SRCM has only a failed test and this very questionable (IMO) new agreement.
SRCM's problem IMO is they don't have a tested interactive product to sell an MSO, while WorldGate does, and they are way way ahead IMO in this race.
SRCM IMO will be BK within 18 months unless they can sucker someone to give them more money.
