Well Australia has a very small national debt - about $A75billion or about $US2500 per Australian. But plenty of European countries (Italy Greece Israel Belgium) have debts that are higher than their GDP. The US debt is well within the historical range of sucessful industrial countries. How come it's increasing though if the budget is in surplus - or is the interest on the debt not counted in the budget or maybe the US government is buying foreign bonds? David
