Hilow,
The IDX equipment for the pilot will not identify the contents of the luggage, that will be left to the detection equipment currently employed (X-ray, trace etc). The intention for this pilot is to provide a means to match the passenger with the luggage that is being checked. My understanding is as follows: a fingerprint (or hand recognition or some other biometric identifier) is scanned in when the luggage is checked and tossed on the conveyor. At the gate the passenger is scanned again to make sure the person who checked in a bag does in fact get on the plane. If you are Joe terrorist looking to blow the plane up, perhaps you still have enough common sense not to get on the plane yourself. This is all an off shoot of the Gore commission to enhance security at US airports.
