Good afternoon, Brian,
I don't know what news reports you have read on the n.hand which give a long shipping date, and I agree with you, I don't necessarily believe anything until I see it. But, from an article in Computer Reseller News (12/2/96):
( Link to techweb.com )
"While Roy-based Iomega only recently unveiled its n-hand disk, Tolson [Iomega marketing manager] said the company is working with several OEMs to have the technology implemented into designs. Starting first with digital cameras, Tolson said he expects that by Christmas 1997, digital cameras will begin shipping with Iomega storage. Between now and September 1997, Tolson said product announcements will introduce devices with n-hand storage technology."
So, if they can do it, things will specifically be out in time for Christmas. Yes, I remember Iceberg. A relative had some Storage Tek at the time (It keeps on waiting... and waiting... and waiting... and waiting... [fade to black])
I don't know how this will be accepted by OEM's. Knowing how the CEO is about announcements (very conservative), my feeling is that Iomega has already gotten some manufacturers very interested. But, you're right, no products have been announced yet which use the n.Hand.
It actually all boils down to the ultimate acceptance of the Zip drive in new and old machines, IMHO, because these disks will be readable with Zip drives, and there's your compatibility issue. If you have a flash device on a PDA/CE/camera/whatever and want to get the info on a desktop, how do you have to interface it? Do you need a new card reader on the desktop, or will you have to go through a cable?
