Okay, my best english translation - CD4 levels basically tell you the status of your immune system. With a low CD4 level, your immune system can no longer fight off bacteria, infections, cancer, etc. For HIV infected individuals, > 500 is optimum, 200-500 so-so, < 200 you have AIDS. In other words, higher is better. Typically, the CD4 levels will decrease over time in an HIV patient.

Viral load - more or less related to the overall health of the patient. Less viral load - patient is better, more viral load - patient is worse.

Weight gain/loss - self explanatory

Hemoglobin levels - not sure what they are saying here.

Of note, with most anti-viral drugs (ex. AZT) they are initially effective in terms of raising CD4 levels and lowering viral load but lose their effectiveness over time. Hope this helps.

Mark.
