Do you want to say more about making a better Windows OS?

My biggest concern is that it requires a change in Apple culture. Now you are no longer trying to beat them, just out do them.

A bit like if Apple was a train locomotive manufacturer and Microsoft a trailer-lorry manufacturer.

At some point the battle was for which one is the preferred mode of transportation, that one is over. Now the contest is to see who produces the best highway hauler.

The Wintel emulation software is a good step in that direction. Can Apple also make the APIs be similar?

I have ported code across various Unices and also to NT. This is, relatively speaking, a simple task, as most of the non-GUI APIs in one are there in the other in one form or another.

Lastly and more importantly, if the GUI is visually similar buyers would not feel pressed to buy Wintel because that is what they have at work. You don't buy a Chevy 'cause is the same as the company car. You buy a Chevy if you like it or find it to be reliable, and if you don't you buy a Japanese car. The same should be the case with OSes.

There is still one difference beyond interface that works against Apple, and that is the incentive to buy Wintel because you can "borrow" software from work and install it at home --in fact I've seen licenses for software which include installation in home machines and laptops.
