TCI, Broadcasters Consider Charging For HDTV

July 29, 1998
skyreport.com

Major television networks and cable giant Tele-Communications Inc. are reportedly contemplating the possibility of charging subscribers a fee to view digital television, including high definition television.

The plan would treat HDTV, which will deliver a clear picture and sound quality to viewers, like a premium movie channel such as HBO. Discussions are reportedly taking place between the cable giant and broadcast networks over the specifics of charging consumers for the advanced offerings.

Upon hearing the news, consumer advocate groups and politicians were quick to point out that broadcasters were given spectrum to carry HDTV for free in order to get the improved broadcasts to the public.
