A question from a disk drive technology novice.. I found the following in an earnings report from Veeco instruments...

Sales for the second quarter of 1998 decreased 6% to $51.1 million from $54.5 million for the second quarter of 1997. Veeco's Metrology product sales increased 30% over the prior year, reflecting the increased use of the Company's products for in-line inspection of critical production steps in data storage applications. Veeco's Process Equipment product sales decreased 48% from the prior year's second quarter, as sales of ion beam etch products declined, while sales of new ion beam deposition equipment increased for use in high density thin film magnetic head (TFMH) data storage applications. Ion beam etch sales continue to be negatively effected by excess industry capacity in data storage. (Yeah, tell me about it)

This can't be the same technology that has put us in the rut we are is can it?

Is there a major difference between thin film inductive and thin film magnetic heads?
