(BSNS WIRE) PulsePoint Communications Signs Licensing Agreement With Ler
PulsePoint Communications Signs Licensing Agreement With Lernout & Hauspie
Speech Products; PulsePoint Communications Leads with Speech-enabled Enhanced
Services Solutions

Business & Technology Editors

CARPINTERIA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 29, 1998--PulsePoint
Communications (Nasdaq/NM:PLPT) Wednesday announced a multi-year
licensing agreement with Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products (L&H)
(Nasdaq/NM:LHSPF) (Easdaq:LHSP-ED.).
L&H is a worldwide market leader in speech and linguistic
technologies, products and services. Under the terms of the agreement,
PulsePoint Communications will license L&H software technology for
integration onto the PulsePoint Enhanced Application Platform for use
with its Communication-Management Suite of Applications and any third
party application that resides on the platform.
PulsePoint will first integrate L&H's carrier-grade
text-to-speech synthesizer, which will allow subscribers to access
text-based content when connected to a PulsePoint system from any
telephone, landline or wireless. Popular applications for
text-to-speech processing include spoken retrieval of e-mail messages
and Internet content, such as Web pages or stock quotes, through a
telephone.
"We are excited to participate in PulsePoint's fundamentally
different approach to enhanced services," said Gerald Calabrese,
president of L&H's Core Technology Division, L&H. "Our companies share
a common vision that speech processing plays an integral role in
unified messaging and the next generation of enhanced services."
Earlier this year PulsePoint introduced the world's first
open-system, carrier-grade, enhanced services solution. At that time
DataQuest issued a wakeup call to the industry. Both NEXTLINK
Communications and GTE Corp. have announced plans for central office
deployments of the PulsePoint solution.
"Speech processing enables services that are basically impossible
with traditional telephone interfaces. By incorporating speech
processing onto our platform, our applications become much easier to
use," said Mark Ozur, president and CEO of PulsePoint Communications.
"We chose L&H technology because their text-to-speech engine is widely
recognized as one of the most natural speech synthesizers on the
market today."
