The Wall Street Journal reports in its Friday edition that the U.S. Senate has approved a broad ban on Internet gambling in an effort to strengthen federal and state prosecutors' fights against illegal betting and "virtual casino" operations overseas. Reporter David Rogers notes there are close to 175 gambling Web sites already operating. Within the Justice Department and the industry, the proposed law has been met with some skepticism. Sue Schneider, who chairs a trade group of interactive gambling companies, says the ban may only result in criminalizing the consumer, who would be subject to fines and even imprisonment, and push U.S. firms out of business. Proponents, however, say that offshore operators can be isolated if prosecutors use the law to obtain court orders forcing service providers to block their customers' access to gambling Web sites. Overseas providers may step in to fill this gap, but proponents hope to raise the costs high enough to discourage what they fear is unlimited public access now.
