(COMTEX) B: JAPANESE WINDOWS 98 OUTSELLS 95 VERSION B: JAPANESE WINDOWS 98 OUTSELLS 95 VERSION TOKYO, July 29 (Asia Pulse via COMTEX) -- Sales of the Japanese-language version of the Windows 98 operating system hit 250,000 packages in the first two days after its release last Saturday, the high-tech research company IDC Japan Ltd. reported Wednesday. The sales easily eclipsed those of its predecessor, Windows 95, which took four days to sell 200,000 copies in 1995. The pace of sales was surpassing the Microsoft Co.'s original projections, an official at the Tokyo subsidiary of Microsoft Corp. said, and the company is rushing to get a second lot of shipments ready. Given sluggish personal computer sales in Japan recently, Microsoft had prepared only 470,000 packages for the initial shipment. However, the so-called "Windows 98 effect "is seen as helping to revive PC sales, an official at IDC Japan said. The company arrived at the overall sales figure by surveying sales at PC retailers and extrapolating. (Nikkei) -0- (C) 1998 Asia Pulse Pte Ltd
