Maurice,
The 'tradition of standardization', the 'spirit of an open global standard', 'blatantly counterproductive to the great collective'. This is language of confiscation of individual property and theft. This is not about some entire wireless industry. There is no such entity. There is only a collection of individuals, companies and states. These sweeping statements of all for one and one for all are very suspicious.
Amazing how no confiscation or theft occurred during the standardization in Europe when GSM was implemented. Or are we only supposed to use your theorems in a vacuum?
So, should Ericsson and the entire wireless industry steal the IPR using their political mates?
I believe I've read press releases that state that IPR for 3G systems would be paid for at a fair and reasonable rate. Just because the two sides can't agree on what is fair and reasonable doesn't constitute robbery... at this point it's still a disagreement.
3G-W-CDMA-VW doesn't exist yet, either in YETI or any other form. Yes? I know there is a lab demo model, but that is hardly 'existing' especially since it includes Qualcomm's IPR.
How do you do that? I mean contradict yourself within the span of two sentences. "doesn't exist yet, in any form" directly followed by "I know there is a demo model" ???? Attempting to invalidate the second situation by using quotes around "hardly 'existing'" doesn't make it any less real. Either it exists or it doesn't. Why is it's existence any less valid because you think it includes QCOM's IPR?
"...it would be naive to think they were not building a bandwagon of GSM based interests to get Qualcomm and the cdmaOne world to defer to them and to persuade their GSM customers to go on buying up large on GSM."
Actually, the naivete would be from thinking that Ericsson wouldn't try to defend their technology and customer base... which is what you seem to think they should have done. Since the GSM user base will still probably be 3-4 times the size of the CDMA user base (your projections notwithstanding...) when these systems come into being, why shouldn't they try to keep their customers?
I consider Ericsson and collective theft immoral. Perhaps you don't.
I consider theft immoral as well, but don't think that Ericsson has stolen anything from QCOM to date. Apparently you have evidence of a court judgement against Ericsson showing otherwise, which would back up your stance. Feel free to lump them together in your own mind, it won't affect my perception of the situation.
Virtuous investments follow virtuous self, not the reverse. A manifestation of a person's values is their investment behavior.
So let me get this straight... you are saying that people who invest in Ericsson by definition can't be virtuous??? Would you ever invest in Hilton? How about Diageo? Boeing? If so, you'd be investing in gambling, alcohol, and weapons of mass destruction. Are all the people who do own these stocks unvirtuous by definition? Do you have any mutual funds that might own any of these, or a thousand other stocks that might not be ready for canonization? I'd be careful, that's a slippery slope you are treading Maurice. I guess we can all invest in Rainforest Cafe, and QCOM, and that's about it.
Another manifestation of a person's values is their perception of reality. Some of us see the situation differently than you, and in that sense, we are no less virtuous than you are. This situation is nowhere near the black and white you want to portray it as, and therefore leaves much to personal interpretation. While it's all well and good to offer yourself up as a martyr at the stake of virutous investment, I'd be careful to note whether anyone is paying any attention. Martyrdom is seldom useful unless it advances the cause. Or is it that you think by investing in QCOM, that you will gain favor with God? Somehow I don't think that particular manifestation is tops on God's virtue "to do" list for humanity. I imagine charity and humility (among others) carry a bit more weight.
The normal course of events is to now refute my arguments by a list of my personal defects, some invective followed by some expletives and invitations to ---- away. That should show 3G-W-CDMA-VW is the real thing and Ericsson is a good, saintly, non-confiscatory, collective.
Maybe that's the way you typically respond, although I must admit it's a bit more condescending than I'd expect from someone of your great moral/virtuous character (according to you). I'd much rather take the high road of reasoning and logic if you don't mind... I'll leave the virtue to my community service work.
