Thank you Druss and Barbara for your replies. Druss regarding this statement - Having the certificates in your possession could mean significant delays and losses. Yes I agree and that is why I hardly ever request certificates, but have you ever heard of "safe keeping"? This apparently is a proceedure where you request your broker to pull shares out of street name and issue certificates, but the broker keeps the certificates at the brokerage house. I don't know if every broker offers this and if there are additional charges. From the two answers to my original question I get the feeling that this isn't necessary!
