This underscores one of the major problems with technical analysis -- it examines stock prices in a vacuum.

You are very right on this.
I forgot to address the issue of Vacuum factor in TA . I am intensely aware of the fact that TA examines a stock in a vacuum, where external events, beyond the control of the intrinsic value of the stock, are not taken in to consideration. Such events could be , as you are aware of, mergers, political events, wars, sympathy movement in the sector , Clinton-Monica factor (I am using this in a generic sense), plain bad weather conditions, etc.
You might remember that a good TA identified UIS (UNYSIS) as a candidate for appreciation.
