New York, July 30 (Bloomberg) -- Morgan Stanley Dean Witter & Co., Edward D. Jones & Co. and Prudential Securities Group were the only three major brokerage firms to pick stocks that beat or matched Standard & Poor's 500-stock index in the second quarter, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing its study with Zacks Investment Research Inc. Morgan Stanley's second-quarter stock picks had returns of 4.9 percent -- compared with 3.3 percent for the S&P index, while Edward D. Jones's and Prudential's picks returned 4.0 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively. Green Tree Financial Corp. was the biggest gainer on Morgan Stanley's recommended list, while Cisco Systems Inc. and Lucent Technologies Inc. led the picks by Edward Jones and Prudential, respectively, the paper said.

Morgan Stanley, the biggest U.S. securities firm, said second-quarter net income rose 45 percent to a record $854 million as booming markets fueled gains in investment banking.
