RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, July 2 (Kyodo) -- A Brazilian man hardly
expected side effects from taking anti-impotence pill Viagra for the
first time, but his jaw hardened up and forced him to keep the mouth
open for some 40 minutes.

The 43-year-old man told local daily Folha de Sao Paulo he got the
U.S.-made pill with a doctor's prescription and used the drug before
intercourse with his girlfriend.

''I managed to reach an erection, but about half an hour later my jaws
stiffened and I could not shut my mouth for about 40 minutes,'' Joao
Roberto Toquero told the Sao Paulo daily.

His doctor has said the side effect was unprecedented and the local
representative of Pfizer Inc. that manufactures the pill said the
episode should not be attributed to the drug.

The man had taken a 50-milligram dose of the medicine and said during
the time he could not close his mouth he felt no pain or headache,
which has been reported among several men who have taken the pill in
Brazil.

He added he is pleased with his sexual performance after using the
pill. ''I am kind of scared of using the pill again, but I feel like
trying it once more,'' he said.

Viagra had hit the country's headlines earlier when a mayor announced
he would distribute the pill among men in his municipality to enlarge
the local population.

The mayor's aim is to increase the share of his city in a federal fund
that is distributed among cities based on their total population.

The unexpectedly low sales of the Viagra, which costs in Brazil the
equivalent of 25 dollars a pill, have disappointed drugstore owners and
surprised medical authorities.

Brazil's Health Ministry authorized sales of the pill in June and it is
sold exclusively by prescription
