SAINT JOHN, N.B. (Dow Jones)--Bruncor Inc. (T.BRR) unveiled ImagicTV Inc., a 51%-owned company based here that has developed the technology to deliver broadcast television services over existing copper telephone wires. In a news release, Bruncor said its investment in ImagicTV will enable it to expand its VideoActive network throughout New Brunswick by adding broadband capability to regular phone lines. It said ImagicTV's "telco-ready" software will enable telecommunications companies worldwide to deliver broadcast television to residential customers, turning traditional copper telephone wire into high-speed Internet Protocol networks like NBTel's VideoActive network. This solution is designed to integrate into any telecommunications firm's existing infrastructure, it said. NBTel is owned by Bruncor. Bruncor said ImagicTV's solution combines quick access to Internet services, including Web surfing and e-mail, with broadcast television and enhanced features such as instant "click and view" and pay-per-view programming. It said customers who choose NBTel's broadcast television service, which NBTel hopes to begin offering early next year, would receive an extensive channel selection - all delivered in "digital-quality picture and sound." Self-serve options will be a fundamental part of the offering, it added. Bruncor is a telecommunications provider.
The balance of ImagicTV is owned by Celtic House International Corp., a firm which provides financing to start-up companies in the information technology sector, and Newbridge Networks Corp. (NN), a networking company. (E 0

TORONTO (Dow Jones)--Bruncor Inc.'s (T.BRR) NBTel unit said it and Balisoft Technologies Inc. have joined to launch a new generation of Internet-based call centers. In a news release, NBTel said it and Balisoft will jointly develop, integrate and market a comprehensive Internet customer service solution that will "seamlessly integrate" into mainstream call centers. The service will allow consumers and vendors to communicate via telephone, e-mail and the Internet, with text and audio chat. The service will also incorporate Web-content by using push technology, it noted. It said the companies plan to offer the integrated service to about 50 major call centers in New Brunswick by the end of the year, and to jointly market the solution to other call-center providers. Balisoft provides Internet-related solutions. Bruncor is a telecommunications company.
OTTAWA (Dow Jones)--Bruncor Inc. (T.BRR), a New Brunswick telecommunications holding company that is developing into a multimedia firm, is "pretty much on track" for 1998, Bill Steeves, chief financial officer, told Dow Jones. Bruncor's major asset and its principal source of earnings is its New Brunswick Telephone Co. unit, the primary supplier of telecommunications services in New Brunswick. Bruncor, in turn, is owned 45% by BCE Inc., a Montreal-based holding company. Bruncor had net income of C$10.3 million or 24 Canadian cents a share in the three months ended March 31, down from C$11.1 million of 26 cents a share a year earlier. First-quarter revenue rose 1.5% to C$130.4 million from C$128.4 million a year earlier. Steeves said Bruncor's goal is to more than offset shrinking margins in traditional telephone activities by expanding multi-media operations, which include new ventures such as cable television. He didn't forecast Bruncor's 1998 earnings. Bruncor's shares are trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange at 26.05, up 0.30. Their 52 -week high is 32.50 and their 52 -week low is 15.13. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission last week
authorized NBTel to provide cable television to New Brunswick's two biggest cities, Saint John and Moncton. Fundy Cable Ltd. (T.FDY) currently supplies cable service in New Brunswick. "We believe that being in the cable business is fundamental to being in the multimedia business," Steeves said. He said NBTel expects to start its cable service early next year, using an advanced copper-based technology that will allow the company to take advantage of the copper wire network already in place in the province. The technology is called ADSL, which stands for asymmetric digital subscriber line. Steeves said NBTel also intends to use the ADSL technology to extend to Fredericton and other communities its Vibe interactive personal computer service, which provides high-speed access to the Internet and other multimedia services. The executive said NBTel has almost 50,000 Internet subscribers in New Brunswick, giving it a higher Internet market penetration than any other region of Canada. Internet is now available to everyone in New Brunswick without toll charge, he said. (MORE) DOW JONES NEWS 07 -03 -98 09:43 AM
Bill Steeves, chief financial officer of Bruncor Inc. (T.BRR), said New Brunswick Telephone will use the ADSL technology to expand its high-speed
broadband communications network. ADSL is the "technology of choice," he said. In the Saint John area, NBTel has installed a more costly system, employing hybrid fiber-coaxial cable. Steeves said NB Tel doesn't plan to use this technology elsewhere. Steeves said the switch to a less costly network technology will contribute significantly to the company's plan to reduce its annual capital spending to about C$115 million. In 1997, capital expenditures totaled about C$140 million, including about C$25 million for the hybrid fiber-coaxial network. Bruncor currently generates 43% of its revenue from local phone services, 40% from long-distance services, and 9% from cellular and other mobility services. The rest of its revenue comes from multimedia services, intellectual property, directories, rents and other activities. The company has retained a 91% share of the consumer long-distance market in New Brunswick. But Steeves said the company believes it will be doing well if it is able to hold its traditional long-distance revenues flat "over the next period of time" in view of the decline in long-distance prices. Most other NBTel operations are showing revenue gains. First-quarter wireless revenues were up 10.5% from a year earlier, mainly because of an increase of more than 11,000 cellular customers from a year earlier. NBTel says it has 76% of New Brunswick's cellular market. Steeves said Bruncor also expects growing income from the sale of the communications technology it is developing on its own and in partnership with
other companies. He said the company's second-quarter intellectual property revenue will include part of the C$21 million proceeds from its sale of its remaining 475,000 shares of California-based Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories Inc. (GCTI), a software development company with expertise in software designed for call centers. Bruncor is to report its second-quarter results July 30. Steeves said Bruncor sees significant revenue potential from its full service information technology company. This company is being formed through a merger of Maritime Information Technology Inc. (MITI) of Saint John and Bruncor's Datacor Corp. unit. Bruncor purchased a 94% interest in MITI for C$22.6 million in April. |
