John,
I have some concern with Amati's profit potential vis a vie the current price. Where exactly will they get their profits from? I can't see sales of modems alone justifying the current price. Hardware is a narrow margin business. Even if sales and profits are good, how much higher can the stock go, based on a rational price to earnings potential basis and not on a speculative bubble driven by program traders? I have a friend in the telecoms industry who tells me that the big money from Amati's technology will go to chip makers and Amati could be left out in the cold. (Ref. Motorola's early acceptance of Amati technology) Any thoughts on this?
I hung with about 10% my original position from 1 1/8 to 20. Like you, I sold the rest much too early, around 5. I could have retired by now if I was a little more patient. Until I can make a rational guess about what the up-side potential is I'm content to sit on the sidelines and look for others with greater upside potential.
Bill
