I can't remember who it was who pointed out that the new Compaq EN and EP series of business computers don't include Zip, nor do they offer it as an option. That would bother me if I hadn't read the following.

_________

HOUSTON, July 27, 1998 - Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced the availability of the Compaq Deskpro EN Series Small Form Factor PC. Announced in mid-April, this sleek, compact desktop provides a powerful solution for office environments with limited desk space. Shipping today in the U.S. and Canada, these affordable desktops start at just $1,199(1).

These models are part of the award-winning Deskpro EN Series, designed to satisfy the needs of enterprise customers who require a consistent industry-standard desktop computing platform.

"We selected Compaq's Deskpro EN Series Small Form Factor for its leading manageability and space-saving design features," said Don Anthony, Network Infrastucture Manager, Valley Health Systems. "Not only is it easy to manage, but the small footprint is ideal for desktop environments such as nurses' stations, where space is at a high premium. In fact, in head-to-head comparisons with other PCs, our employees had a strong preference for the Deskpro EN Series Small Form Factor."

The new Compaq Deskpro EN Series Small Form Factor, which is 40 percent smaller than traditional desktops, features a 12.5-inch by 14.6-inch chassis. Despite its compact size, it includes a powerful Intel Pentiumr II processor running up to 400MHz, 32MB or 64MB SDRAM (expandable to 256MB), 3.2GB(2) or 6.4GB(2) SMART II Ultra ATA hard drive, and embedded ATI Rage Pro Turbo AGP graphics (with up to 8MB SGRAM). An optional 24X Max IDE CD-ROM(3) is also available. With its embedded NIC(4), AGP graphics and PremierSoundT audio, the Deskpro EN Series Small Form Factor is ready for easy deployment on any network. It is also available with a sealed chassis and no removable media for customers wanting a tightly controlled, highly manageable PC.

The EP and EN series are designed for large, networked enterprises. These are obviously not Iomega's target market for Zip.

Meanwhile, Zip is standard on the Presario 5030 ($1,299)

and the Presario 5140 ($2,999)

athome.compaq.com

and the 5610 ($1,899)

athome.compaq.com

and the 5630 ($2,399)

athome.compaq.com

That makes 4 out of 4 of the available Presario MiniTower models. The Presario line is aimed at the home buyer. This indicates to me that Compaq, which started out offering Zip on only one of its Presario models, has found that models with Zip sell better in this segment of the market than those without.
