S,

For me it was that it was the first site I heard about that had free web space. I used it for several months but then got really annoyed by the incredible lack of speed (Contacting www.geocities.com,....ZZzzzzzzzZZZZzzz), lack of space and then, the cherry on top was that you were supposed to put the ugly Geocities icon on your opening page.

We use Media One for our cable/cable modem and they offered us free web space with no strings attached and gave us a lot more room than GeoCities and at a blazing speed. Just before we left GeoCities they did increase the amount of web space you're given, but it was too little too late.

On the other hand, I like the neighborhood 'concept' of Geocities though the likelihood of finding one that 'fits' you is low (we picked Silicon Valley because my in-laws live in California). Also, every week when I get my Yahoo "Pick's of the Week" email, it is quite often that some of the web sites originate at www.geocities.com, which means that there are a lot of people getting press. Just for the heck of it, try to get an address in a GeoCities neighborhood -- you'll see how many people are already there. I think the IPO should be successful, but then again I thought the Jets would make the playoffs last fall.

EDIT: I just read URLMan's reply and I guess we're saying the opposite. Oh well. It has been several months since we used Geocities.
