Eric, I think you're right.

My reading is that there will be API's for Solaris in Netware 5, and that there will be backward compatibility on Merced. But there is no specific mention of UltraSparc III. It sure wouldn't surprise me to see this, however, given the relatively cosy relationship between Novell and Sun and Schmidt and Joy.

As to Alpha, it seems to be fading from the realm of "major platforms". At least for our purposes, we're planning to migrate away from Alphas within the next 2-3 years. The Alpha future just looks to uncertain...
