THEORETICAL QUESTION

If our REAL names (yours, mine, Jeff's, etc) was indicated at the top of this screen instead of a company name or subject ... and our actual addresses, phone numbers, family members, etc. were listed in our profiles) ...

IF a number of repeated posts were made that ... you, me, Jeff ... whomever ....
1) Had AIDS.
2) Was a child molester.
3) Was engaged in fraud.
4) Stole money from out last employer.
5) Had a prison record.
ETC.

And then you/we had difficulty getting a job. Couldn't get insurance. Couldn't rent a home. Couldn't get a date. (attempt at humor) Friends of family members shunned them because of connection with us.

Should you/we be able to find out the actual name of our accusers? Should you/we be allowed to take legal action? (Assuming there was a material & financial impact because of these accusations, rather than just hurt feelings.)

If you/we got attorney's involved in the attempt to ascertain who our un-named accusors were ... should it be assumed ... because you/we are taking pro-active measures ... this automatically implies that you/we are "guilty" of whatever accusations have been made by people hiding behind a moniker/alias?

Just curious about how people look at this when it's personal (and family is involved) ... rather than when we're dealing only with "companies" and stocks.

This is where I personally have a problem with some of these internet "privacy" issues.

Cheryl

P.S. I don't believe there should be free/open access to names of posters. But, I do feel that when they've "gone over the edge" that sometimes access to these names is justified. I know it's a fine line. But I think a fine line is better than no line. JMHO
