Larry : <OT> The Cuban Missile Crises was done by ABC ( I think ) I taped a copy but would have to dig for it. It was a real eye opener as they had the not before released documents from Russia, and interviews with that General as well as many of our own top Brass. It's real clear how it had spun out of control, that at the last minute it was barley diverted, You got it right. JFK was vilified for not launching that attack but it was probably one of his few profiles in courage since he had to restrain the macho impulse and image and take it on the chin.
Picture Khrushchev who knew even more about the dilemma his General was in, and unable to get in touch with him, sent a message to JFK via running in his PJs in the middle of the night to a radio station in a last ditch effort to get JFK to forestall that attack. I think the documentary may have been named 14 days in October, but what an eye opener it was. All the big boys were in way over their heads..you might easily say it also had a certain degree of a Grace of God..eliment in it, as if that radio message had failed for any reason you would not be reading this.
I'm not sure if there is a book on it, but that tape if you see it will forever shake your faith to the roots that world leaders have a handle on things. here is a url you may find of interest hyperion.advanced.org The other I mentioned is not well known, and I don't think it's been documented at all and while it may not have come as close to nuclear war, It could have ended the world much like a dooms day bomb thanks to the shear ignorance of the nuclear hawks during Nixons term in office.
It had to do with the nuclear bases we had put in Thailand. I saw Nixon as he had a break down, and because he thought it was so close he even went on TV with tears in his eyes, and in his own way, was saying he was sorry to the American people, ( but they knew not what for ). This was when he mined Haiphong harbor, to send a desperate message to the other side of how serious the situation was. We had actually lost the main missile base in Thailand to ( Chinese forces I think it was ) but any way we did get them back. Had we failed to have gotten them back, I'm sure they would have used the self destruction sequence. Problem was the big boys never counted on that and had no earthly idea of the out come of that much concentrated nuclear power going off all in one place at one time. I'm positive that at the very least it would have altered Earth's Orbit enough that our entire eco system and food chain would have broke down , that at the least. And the Chinese who captured the base had no real idea of how serious or big it was, and likely didn't know of the panic that was in Nixon or the Kremlin at the time, special forces did re-take the base and it was sort of written off as a non event, as these big boys live in some sort of insulated world to were denial becomes a part of their make up.
Oh it was nothing we were just minutes from ending the world. <G> Official history may never record it, but for one brief moment in time a U.S. nuclear missile base In Thailand and during the Viet Nam war was actually captured and in the hands of the communist. The fate of the entire world hung on a thread until that base was re-taken. There was no way our military leaders would have allowed it to have stayed intact and in enemy hands. It's odd that being we had enough fire power there at the time to have turned most all of Asia into a parking lot that would glow in the dark , there has been no official study or statement to what would have happen if that much fire power had went off in a constricted area. Mankind had built a dooms day bomb and didn't even know it. So much for how smart we are.
As far as the News Media was concerned Watergate was more important than this. Jim
