I wonder at what point the "indexers" would sell some of their index funds..to protect their profits? This would be a spiral downward as the resulting decline could touch off redemptions from other indexers.
My feeling, knowing that most indexers have probably never known fear in the market, is that they will cash is if they see their funds taking big hits. It's one thing to talk long term, and another to stand by watching a loss of 40-50% of one's retirement account value on conviction it will come back in the future. The year 2000 bug may add fuel to this possible fire.

just speculating ..and I'm bias as I have puts options on KO and many other "nifty fifty " types at this time. I.E. Gilette, INTC,
Mc Donalds...and put leap options on Apple. At least my downside risk is known unlike shorting these stocks. After all, it may turn around & break 12,000 for all anyone knows...

all opinions/thoughts long or short are appreciated
