History is littered with such upheavals in technology. The highly proliferate Neanderthals gave way to the smaller Cro-Magnon. Iron gave way to bronze. Armor became useless when firearms were developed. etc.

It is also littered with stories of improved OSes developed by clever hackers for every PC architecture that never pan out. Of all the rumors of improved operating systems developed by some group in a garage, Linux is the only one I can think of that ever got widespread support and made it to a useable form, much less even proven to exist.

These stories are a dime a dozen. Look how difficult it's been for even Be to make it in the market with BeOS, and they have deep pockets, and a great OS with great development tools. The BeOS is still an also-ran.
