"Look how difficult it's been for even Be to make it in the market with BeOS, and they have deep pockets, and a great OS with great development tools. The BeOS is still an also-ran." BeOS has its problems, the major one being the choice of C++, and its lack of dynamic runtime binding, for its development environment for the OS. Its threading model is nice, but has the potential to be a resource hog (threads may increase the appearance of speed for a machine, but having the processor constantly switching between threads is slow). I wouldn't call BeOS great, just like I wouldn't call Linux great. I often see kneejerk statements to this effect. Each OS is good in certain areas. BeOS could be a great multimedia platform. Linux could be a great cheap server platform. MacOS is a great single-user OS. Windows is a great OS for your secretary. I definitely wouldn't use MacOS as a server, nor use Linux as an OS for a simple computer user.
