Dry-Clean No Bar to DNA Test

Forensic experts testing Monica Lewinsky's cocktail dress may be able to determine whether sperm was spilled on it and whose it is, even if the garment has been dry-cleaned, a leading expert said yesterday.

One of the nation's leading forensic scientists, who pioneered applying biotechnology laboratory techniques to criminal cases, said that traditional dry-cleaning with organic solvents doesn't necessarily destroy evidence.

"I've had experience with garments that have been dry-cleaned after they were supposedly involved in sexual assaults, and there was material that was left behind," said Edward Blake of Forensic Science Associates, a consulting firm in California.

Normal washing with soapy water would be more likely to remove any deposits, he said.

Blake laid out the complex, step-by-step process of testing the dress first for sperm - there can be 50,000 to 100,000 spermatozoa in a drop the size of a pinhead - and then for any other substances mingled with the sperm.

For example, tests can determine whether cells typical of saliva or vaginal fluids are present along with the sperm, Blake said. And DNA tests on those cells can show whose saliva or whose vaginal fluid.
