Hybrid Networks, Sharp and Itochu Team Up to Provide Economical Cable Modems

Hybrid Announces an Agreement to Collaborate with Sharp and Itochu in the Design, Manufacture, and Distribution of Cable Modems

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 11, 1996--Hybrid Networks, Inc., a leading developer of cable modems for high-speed Internet access, announced today that Sharp Corporation and Itochu Corporation will collaborate with Hybrid in the design, manufacture and distribution of cable modems.

This collaboration will make tremendous strides in reducing the cost of high-speed Internet access for the emerging market for Internet access and telecommuting.

Carl Ledbetter, Hybrid's chairman, president and chief executive officer, commenting on the benefits of choosing these partners said, "Sharp's core digital technologies and manufacturing expertise will give Hybrid Networks a supplier of the highest quality and capability for our markets. In addition, because Sharp will be manufacturing its own version of the Hybrid modem line under license, the industry will also have a major consumer electronics manufacturer as a supplier of high quality low cost cable modems. Itochu brings to the collaboration tremendous distribution capability in all parts of the world and will insure a healthy supply channel for customers of Hybrid products."

Sharp will manufacture Hybrid Series 2000 internal and external cable modems for two-way cable and telephone return connections. Encryption will be available for customers who require the ultimate in security. The Hybrid/Sharp cable modems will offer many options to the customer who wants cost effective, high-speed access to the Internet. Increasing numbers of Internet users want to visit web sites and download multimedia files using video, audio, high-quality graphics, and animation, yet the capacity of telephone modem access is so slow that such activities take longer than most users want to wait.
With Hybrid cable modems these transactions take only a fraction of the time.

Minoru Miyuki, Corporate Executive Director and Group General Manager, Electronic Components Group, Sharp Corporation, had the following to say, "We see high-speed Internet access over cable modems exploding in 1997, and Sharp wants to be part of the market. We believe that Hybrid Networks offers the most advanced cable modem technology, and we will collaborate to provide the industry's most advanced and cost effective cable modems available."

High speed cable modem access to the Internet will make working at home and remote offices cost effective and more efficient. Teleworkers will be able to transfer files at lightning speeds between corporate LANs and remote sites or home offices making telecommuting a productive solution for businesses both large and small. Cable modems will also deliver multimedia information from web sites and remote servers to home and desktop computers with the long awaited speed needed to make these applications realistic for consumers and time-conscious professionals.

Until recently the only alternatives for remote access to data services and the world wide web have been limited either to low-speed solutions or very costly high-speed solutions. Most remote users are stuck with PSTN modem speeds of 14.4 Kbps or 28.8 Kbps, or 128 Kbps via ISDN. Compare these to the extraordinary speed of cable modems that perform eighty times faster than ISDN and six times faster than T1.
