In 1984-1986 EDS consolidated over 240 manned operational GM computer sites into approximately 4 super data centers that were shared with other customers. It saved GM tens of millions and was very profitable for EDS. Spreading SAP around every division and every department seems like a regression to past environments. However, depending on how SAP is integrated across the company with shared data bases, the original promise of distributed processing can be achieved. It's a more expensive approach, but if it works, then its worth it. If it dos not, then it will be consolidated again just like the mid 1980's.
