Back in '88 we had a bad Summer in the Midwest. High 90s to 100s and only down to the high 80s at night. No rain, fields that should have been growing 180 bushels of corn per acre were plowed under as they weren't worth harvesting. The city of Bloomington had less than 100 days of water left and banned lawn watering, car washing and pool filling. An alderwomen on the city council was found to have a swimming pool full of sparkling water and a water bill 6 times higher than normal. Dang it all if it wasn't a leaky toilet that used all that water. I never could figure how a toilet could leak into a pool. She is the mayor now.

Couple of years back Florida was having a drought and a friend's father who lived in Florida was here for a few weeks. He had left his automatic watering system on. His neighbor called and asked if he wanted his watering system turned off and friend's father said not to bother. The neighbor told him that there was a $1,000 per day fine for watering and he already owed $6,000. The system got turned off.
