Parade magazine, the supplement to many Sunday newspaper editions has a feature article in today's paper about diabetes:

* 16 million Americans have diabetes and a third--5.4 million --don't know it
* Type I diabetes is the most common chronic childhood disease. The medical cost of raising a child with diabetes through adulthood is $600,000
* Someone in the U.S. dies from the complications of diabetes every 3 minutes

"Diabetes is the most common chronic, severe disease we face," says Dr. Gerald Bernstein, president of the American Diabetes Association."Within the next decade, the number of Americans with diabetes will rise to 21 million." The chief reason: obesity.

The article also mentions that since July 1, ALL medicare beneficiaries have been covered for blood meters and testing strips.
