Hi Fred:

Well maybe I made a mistake in trying to "UNZIP" Mr. MZIP last week, in terms of consuming a bit of my personal time on someone who's trying to ruffle the feathers of those bullish on Novell's prospects going forward.

Nonetheless, I will make brief and strategic efforts to try and point out information on Novell as unbiased as possible. I respect the power, size, and marketing girth of Microsoft, yet I'm equally respectful of the drive, determination, and creative energy of Dr. Schmidt and his team at Novell.

Just as a heads up for those not picking up the latest Investor's Business Daily for Monday, August 3 (comes out Saturday on newstands), there is a full page article in the Computer and Technology section by Lisa Wirthman (she's covered MSFT and NOVL articles in the past, with a bit of a bias against NOVL in earlier articles) titled "Novell Beating Microsoft To The Year 2000 Punch". Lisa's article is articulate and unbiased in describing Novell's upcoming launch of Netware 5.0. I'll try to cut and paste from the electronic version that will be available Monday morning.

Here are a few quotes from both Novell people and Microsoft......

"Netware 5.0 is the realization of all the things that have happened over the last 12 months" said Stewart Nelson, vice president of Novell Products Group in Orem, Utah.

Ironically, helping Novell is an unexpected boost from Microsoft.

Microsoft's competing Windows NT 5.0 software has been delayed several times, and now is expected next summer.

Microsoft President Steve Ballmer dismisses the idea that his company is handing Novell a big opportunity <<NSS, its Schmidt that handing NW5 and NDS to MSFT!!>> "I don't think it's going to make much of a diffference in terms of market share if they have something out in September and we have something out...whenever after that", he said. "There's a problem with the year 2000, but that's a problem for everybody."

<<Can you believe that quote??? I mean, what he's basically saying is that Novell has the solutions to "everybody's year 2000 problem" if I read between the lines correctly. For some reason he feels that 9 to 12 months of lead time by Novell isn't a "problem". Hmmm, this is getting very, very, interesting. Where's Joe Antol? Joe, you've got to sense what is going to happen over the next few months, eh? >>

Regards,

QuadK
