Sig, My SWAG on Clinton situation: I do not think that they have enough evidence to nail Clinton on obstruction of justice. The perjury charge also looks pretty weak due to the lack of materiality and lack of damages. The Drudge report has no stains found on the dress. If I were Monica's mother the first thing I would have done is had her dress cleaned. This could have been done before the dress was supeoned. Apparently, the threat against Lewinskys mother was an obstruction of justice charge for withholding the dress after it had been supoened. I think all of this has been discussed by the attorneys for both sides and the Judge and it is scripted for the 18th. There has been some talk that Bruce Lindsey was trying to get Tripp to not go public with some part of the Kathleen Wiley story. But that falls short of obstruction of justice. Also, if Lindsey was seriously involved in that sort of thing I would expect that he would be negotiating for immunity himself after taking the fifth. (Apparently he is not doing this). Politically Clinton needs to clarify his relationship with Lewinsky. But the Grand Jury has no power to indite the president. I expect the news media will continue to try to drain every bit of sensationalism out the story. The Grand Jury could indite Tripp, But the matter is inexorably petering out. The bottom line is that Starr does not have a case against the President. That is why Clinton agreed to testify. I read the Brill article on this matter and all of these actions were aimed at a presidential sting operation. Goldberg and Tripp were looking for a scandal that they could write stories about and make money, Starr was a prosecutor in search of a presidential crime. He had been searching for a crime since 1991 and had not come up with anything. Remember Goldberg was a dirty tricks agent for Nixon. When Starr could not come up with a crime, he tried to harass the president and his wife into making the error of perjury or obstruction justice while defending themselves. Then he could get them on a derivative crimes. A poll shows that 63% of the American people think that this is sting operation and believe that Tripp willingly participated in it despite her protests to the contrary. The news media has been completely irresponsible in publishing rumors and factually untrue stories in their quest to scoop. each other. Clinton haters have assumed that every story is true. The news media were predicting impeachment in a week. This story came in with a bang and is going to go out with a whimper. Neither the Republicans or the Democrats are going to renew the special prosecutor act when it expires next year. The Republicans know the Democrats will use it to get even with them when the next Republican is elected president. This is the last hurrah for Starr. I expect there will be a measure of uncertainty in the markets on the 16th and 17th and perhaps for some days thereafter similar to what we have seen already. This should cause a few bucks to be sidelined. It is not clear that the Grand Jury tapes will be made public anytime soon. We will have to wait probably for some time for resolution of the matter. Hyde does not look particularly sympathetic to the Grand Jury proceeding. He is not interested in impeaching the president for peckerdillos. (after all that would expose 60% of the members of congress to similar treatment). JMHO Jim Kelley
