Hi, Dan...Yes, I assume that a conspiracy theory, although the most entertaining, is wrong...the major players have to settle the terms, and, in your unified theory, Rohm or Fujitsu has to provide 64K FRAM. That takes a lot of talking among a lot of people. You can at least point to an 'interlocking directorate' or something like that.
Then the new alliance or entity will have the technology and capital to challenge the other interests. You might check to see how close Verifone is to conventional credit card issuers, which have been its bread and butter in the past. My impression is that Smartcards are considered a threat to the establishment, but there may be tectonic shifts underway. Internet e-commerce visions may be attractive enough for Verifone to alienate old customers, perhaps...they have their own schemes, and Verifone may be eventually obsolete without a smartcard play. Something's up.
Good Luck in your orals. This thesis can be defended now, but in some months the fog should clear.
