Nine Bidders in Bezeq Tender for Purchase of 10,000 ADSL Modems

By Efi Landau

Bezeq has published an international tender for the purchase of ADSL modems in anticipation of the start of service at the end of the year, and has received nine bids. The tender is for the purchase of an initial 10,000 modems, and is estimated to be worth $3-5 million.

"Globes" has learned the names of five of the bidders: ECI Telecom; Orckit, Koor Communication and Security with equipment of US company Ascend; Netcom, with equipment from US company Cisco; and Tadiran Telecommunications, with equipment from Alcatel of France.

A Bezeq spokesperson confirmed that nine bids had been received, but would not divulge details of the competing companies.

As exclusively reported in "Globes", Bezeq is about to begin trials in Tel Aviv of fast multimedia and Internet transmissions to subscribers, by means of ADSL modems. Initially, Bezeq will use modems from Orckit and Alcatel, which were used for an internal trial among Bezeq employees in Holon.

The companies supplying the content for the trial will be iNFOGATE of the Bynet group, and Internet service provider ISDN-Net.

The trial will include two groups: a few hundred subscribers connected to the Shikun Lamed exchange, who will receive content from ISDN-Net; and another few hundred subscribers connected to the Ramat Aviv exchange, who will receive content from iNFOGATE.

ADSL is technology that enables fast broad-band communications transfer, at up to 8 mbps, on ordinary copper wires, on which Bezeq's infrastructure is based. A special modem is installed on the subscriber's home computer, via which he receives access to the Internet at extremely high speed, and also various multimedia services.

Bezeq sees the ADSL service as the answer to fast modems on cable and satellite television, in the context of competition in domestic telecommunications due to begin in 1999.
